Hong Kong’s very own super-club, Beijing Club, just keeps on pushing the limits with the fourth in the series of Ministry of Sound events. This month, Beijing Club welcomes DJ Lewis Boardman who will be performing on the 26th of June, moving MOS to Thursday nights. Lewis started his career with a trip to Ibiza in 1999, only to then find himself being invited to join Circus by Liverpool’s top jock, Yousef. Only a few years after his first DJing attempts, Lewis Boardman had already found himself playing alongside the likes of Derrick Carter, Fatboy Slim, Danny Krivit, Darren Emerson and Tim Deluxe to name just a few. Meanwhile an impressive list of his peers have expressed their admiration for his smooth mixing and tough beats including Erick Morillo, Justin Long, Tom Middleton, Paul Woolford, Groove Armada, Doc Martin, Onionz and Joeski. High praise indeed! Lewis continues to work closely with the Circus family, constantly breaking the status quo of house music today. At 23 years old Lewis Boardman is one of the hottest rising talents in house music, a resident DJ at Liverpool’s ‘House Rules’ club of the year, Circus! This rising star of the U.K.’s underground house scene has made his name DJing alongside some of the biggest names in the business, but he found his way into dance music by accident 6 years ago. During the ‘90’s Lewis was into indie and rock music, looking towards the Stones, the Kinks and Oasis for inspiration before a trip to Ibiza changed his perspective on music totally. At a time when his record collection was delving further and further into the history of rock music Lewis’ experiences on the White Isle led him in a totally different direction that was to change his life totally, “In ’99 I was dragged to Ibiza by 12 of my mates and I didn’t want to go! But when I got there I didn’t want to go come home!” The next step in his musical journey was a little closer to home, a trip to Liverpool clubbing institution Cream. He had heard about a young Liverpudlian DJ called Yousef who had just started a residency in the fabled club. Hearing his future mentor for the first time was a revelation, “This young lad from Liverpool was playing house music that I thought only 40 year old DJs from New York could play!” Lewis wanted to emulate his newfound inspiration and play the U.S. house sound in his home city, so he bought himself decks. It wouldn’t be long until he would cross paths with Yousef again. Lewis had been busy channelling his energies into music production and DJing courses in Liverpool and Manchester when he handed a mix to Liverpool’s premier DJ, Yousef. Recognising a kindred spirit, and with his Circus club night quickly gaining momentum Yousef and partner in crime Richard McGinnis asked Lewis to join the family. Described by Yousef as “…a future lion tamer at the Circus!” Lewis has seized the opportunity given to him with both hands. Only a few years after his first DJing attempts he has already found himself playing alongside the likes of Derrick Carter, Fatboy Slim, Danny Krivit, Darren Emerson and Tim Deluxe to name just a few. Meanwhile an impressive list of his peers have expressed their admiration for his smooth mixing and tough beats including Erick Morillo, Justin Long, Tom Middleton, Paul Woolford, Groove Armada, Doc Martin, Onionz and Joeski. High praise indeed! Being one of the finalists on ITV show ‘The Joy Of Decks’ gave Lewis valuable insight into what it takes to make it to the top of the DJing game after he beat off hundreds of other talented disc-jockeys to make it into the last 8 in the competition. Over the last year his DJing exploits have taken him far and wide. Not only has he played in several of the UK’s top venues (Nation, Ministry Of Sound, Sankey’s Soap, The Bomb, etc) he has also joined Circus on missions to global clubbing hotspots Miami and Ibiza. When he isn’t jet-setting Lewis is a resident DJ in the truest sense. Not only does he play at every Circus event he works with Yousef and Rich behind the scenes in The Masque venue on all aspects of running the club. So when the awards are being handed to Circus and the tickets for their latest event are selling out Lewis has contributed a lot more than just his music to the occasion. Equally comfortable with setting the scene for another DJ or taking centre stage himself Lewis’ brand of house music is jackin, but with a deep side that helps balance out some of the harder edged sounds. Citing influence such as local hero Yousef, European champions of the underground Phil Weeks and Miss Kitten, and American house heavyweights such as DJ Sneak, Kenny Dope, Stacey Pullen and the ubiquitous Derrick Carter, Lewis’ greatest achievement so far was playing Pacha in Ibiza, “I got to play for 3 hours in one of the worlds best clubs before two of my favourite DJs, Derrick Carter and Yousef.” Say no more. After concentrating on the DJing for the last few years Lewis is now getting back into producing as well as playing the sounds he loves. Expect to see him utilise his production knowledge more extensively and break into releasing music in the future as he continues his march towards wider recognition. Lewis’ rise from unknown bedroom DJ to respected big room house spinner has mirrored Circus’ phenomenal growth to the award winning status it now holds. It’s refreshing to see new faces like Lewis Boardman and the whole Circus team breaking through the house music status quo and holding their own amongst the clubbing establishment. Their success is testimony that when house is done properly it is still the ultimate soundtrack to a night out. For Lewis Boardman it was a visit to Ibiza that started his love of house music. He should thank his mates for dragging him there!
