TAKU, meaning ‘home’ in Japanese is a small, yet cozy boutique Japanese eatery, located in the heart of Hong Kong’s Soho District on Elgin Street. Booth seating predominates the dining room providing a cozy, almost private atmosphere. Vintage Kimonos from an earlier time (circa 1950’s) hang above the stairway. The freshest Sashimi and Sushi with seafood imported from Japan are prepared at the counter as soon as one enters the restaurant. However, perhaps the biggest un-sung hero of the menu will be the noble, yet humble Tofu. Exquisite in texture and its ability to pair with other great flavors, TAKU makes homemade fresh tofu every morning using only soybeans, spring water and ‘Nigari’, a natural ingredient containing minerals found in seawater. “When we run out, we run out” says Chef Ah Keung, as the beans must be soaked overnight and it cannot be made instantly. Emphasizing this philosophy, there is a bag of Soybeans at the font of the bar with a small sign stating that "These Beans Today are Tomorrow’s Tofu".
